Chocolate truffles have become a symbol of luxury and richness ever since their creation. They're made with a chocolate ganache inside with a tempered chocolate coating.

Why this confection called truffle?

Truffles get their name because a traditional French truffle-style chocolate is formed into a small ball before rolling it in cocoa powder to give it a rustic look that resembles the valuable truffle fungus.

Although they have the same name, chocolate truffles do not contain truffles of the mushroom variety.

Making chocolate truffles at home

The basic chocolate truffles have only two ingredients: chocolate and heavy whipping cream. You might be surprised to discover that you can make them at home, even though they are considered a gourmet delicacy. Butter or corn syrup also can be added to improve the mouthfeel and smooth out the texture of chocolate truffles.

In making truffles, you can try any chocolate of your choice. Aside from using different types of chocolate, you can also flavour the ganache by mixing in extracts or flavouring oils.

To make chocolate truffles, you'll need to dice a bar of chocolate and heat heavy cream before pouring the cream over the chocolate and combining them until the mixture is smooth. Once this chocolate ganache is given some time to set, you can roll it into small spheres and dip it in melted chocolate or in, cocoa powder or another type of topping, like candies, nuts, or other sprinkles.
